Do you know the four learning quadrants in Operant Conditioning? Operant conditioning, also known as instrumental learning, is a form of associative learning by which all animals learn; effectively pairing a behaviour or action with a consequence. The four quadrants are known as: positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment and negative punishment. These are common in training when shaping a behaviour to a desired outcome. When we apply a stimulus as a reinforcer, we do this to increase and strengthen the likelihood of a desired behaviour occurring. When a punisher is applied, this is done so to decrease or weaken the reoccurrence behaviour we would class as 'undesirable'. This can provide people with the basic mathematical language, understanding and application of how operant condition works. The way these are applied in training is through the addition or subtraction of something. What a horse deems as reinforcing, while this is a general association, is subjective to that individual horse and requires greater exploration of the nuances involved. Knowing how these quadrants work can help us better understand how horses learn, why they work and most importantly, how to appropriately apply them in an ethical and horse-centred way. A fantastic weekend at this years horsemanship camp at CHAPs Collingham Horse Adventure Park! A weekend filled with tears, laughter, friendship and growth; what a combination. The body does not maintain itself when it is strong, and the body does not remain in itself weak. The body is always in a constant state of change; adapting and compensating to the environment, workload and pathologies that may be present. The choice to what extent we look after our body is down to us, however we must consider the horse does not have this option with many of the limitations and training approaches we provide. one potato, two potato, three potato.. four! Great photos of me doing my first session with the four Exmoor colts since arriving in Derbyshire, after having some time to settle in. My first session with the boys was on spatial relaxation in the field environment, with a little of the work I have done previously coming together in perfect unison, prompting their natural curiosity. We often overlook the breakdown of what each interaction, task or exercise has within. For example; for a horse to be comfortable haltering, they first need to be comfortable sharing space with us, to be comfortable being approached, to be comfortable to make contact with us and for us to make consensual contact with them.. all before we even think about a halter! Last Monday I was down in Sussex at Knepp Rewilding Estate with the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust overseeing the trailering and transporting of four feral Exmoor yearling colts back up to Derbyshire. I will be working alongside the trust in a project spanning the Summer to not only work on handling basics of all eight ponies, but to train members of staff in equine behaviour, management and both ethical and practical handling skills. The little guys made a fantastic start on my first visit to them! The Exmoor will play an important role in land management and rewilding schemes here in Derbyshire, which I will be delving into in a little more detail over the next few weeks. Summers final weekend saw a trio of clinics back in August! A great time observing and photographing the Konik Polskis on my latest trip to Wicken Fen Nature Reserve / @wickenfennt. Wicken Fen is home to two herds of feral Koniks; one breeding herd and one non-breeding herd. A large breeding herd of horses is made of separate bands in the group, consisting of a number of mares and one breeding stallion. The interaction between the different bands, especially that of the stallions, is something I find super interesting to watch, often rendering the traditional thoughts on stallions to be far from true. Luna is our latest visitor for a stay with us throughout the rest of August here at Homestead Equestrian Centre. Another great clinic at Collingham Horse Adventure Park for 2023! The morning half of the clinic saw us begin with groundwork (always the place to start!) After lunch to refresh, we recapped aspects of the mornings groundwork before working with our horses in the saddle; this is where we were able to work more on rider awareness, how we can inhibit or influence connection and movement of our horses in the saddle, and what we could change to communicate and nurture confidence, and better navigate our bodies as one. A great group working on their horsemanship in last weekends groundwork clinic here in Derbyshire! All of my clinics have a baseline principle to them; connection, regulation and softness. This clinic heavily focused on these aspects, before beginning progression towards boundaries and body maneuverability. My clinics always "work with the pair we have in the arena". We may have a clinic set focus, but things are always adaptable. I really enjoy any kind of tracking on foot and there is no lack of variety in Africa! The opportunity to track, monitor and photograph Cheetah on foot was an amazing experience! As part of work on the Imire conservancy, a huge focus is their population of Black and White Rhino. We were were fortunate enough to get hands on with conservation activities to monitor them including health checks and tracking on foot! Some days, there are just no words. In the 1980’s, Zimbabwe's Rhinoceros population was decimated by poaching, resulting in a 90% decline in numbers. The demand for horn is fuelled by the black market trade in far-eastern countries such for their supposed medicinal. Their are a number of Rhinos on the conservancy, with Imire's breeding programme now responsible for successfully releasing over 13 individuals into wilderness areas within Zim. A few weeks ago, something pretty awesome happened. Prince lay down. He lay down near me, and allowed me to sit with him. There is a difference between a horse choosing to lay down next to you, near you, and a horse that has been trained to lay down or a resting horse that you approach. The majority of these aspects show an element of trust, but for a horse to lay down in your presence shows something else. A great group of horses and people at last weekends Kindergarten Clinic at Derby College Equestrian Centre. The thing about my clinics is they are adaptable. Sure, there is a loose structure we work towards, but it needs to be mouldable to offer those little adjustments that work for each individual pair that attend. After the first half ecotporsting exercises that promote focus and regulation, we moved on to helping a horse understand contact cues, and close-contsct exercises for body maneuverability, starting with the shoulders! I've never been a fan of heights, so a 15 minute trip in a suspended glass box such, as the Teleférico do Funchal, never initially thrills me. The city of Funchal has one of 7 cable cars in Madeira, connecting the seafront to the parish of Monte and the Tropical Gardens. The journey takes 15 minutes over 3718 metres and elevates in height over 560 metres. Finishing off the final day in Iceland with the view between the ears of my Icelandic Horse, 'Headling'. Surley a trip to Iceland would not of been complete without learning a little more about the Icelandic Horses?! Icelandic horses are one of the purest breeds in the world and known famously for their tölt, named as their fifth gait, which they are able to do due to a gene mutation. Ironcially, day three in Iceland was car hire day, and the first day driving on through a blizzard and white-over roads to attempt the golden circle route. The first stop was þingvellir national park, the only place in the world where you can walk between two continental plates; North America and Europe. Awesome afternoon whale watching in Flaxaflói Bay off the coast of Reykjavík. We were lucky enough to see three indiviudal Humpback Whales; certainly not my best photography by far, but photographing out at sea in heavy snow was not easy! One of three countries in the world that still practices Whaling, in Iceland whales that are hunted are shot with explosive harpoons, often after a lengthy chase, leaving the animal exhausted. Iceland is hopefully ending whaling after the end of this year. So many highlights from one day.. One of the ways I feel best helps to develop our own perspective, knowledge and insight is to learn from the horse; after all, cliches aside, they will always be our biggest teachers for those who are open to learn. This week I spent my own CPD day at @wickenfennt doing a few ecology observations on the Konik Ponies, with some brilliant photographic opportunities around the reserve, including my first Muntjac Deer! (Remember guys, long lenses; no disturbing natural behaviours!).
